Water Intake System on the Kitimat River

water intake system

Alcan Smelters & Chemicals’ requirements for year-round uninterrupted production water called for the construction of a new 16,000 USGPM fresh water intake system at its pumping station on the Kitimat River. The project entailed the underwater installation of two new screened intakes, a protective grille, conductor pipes and a new compressor building attached to the pumping station.

SDE provided complete project definition, project management, multi-disciplinary detailed design services, cost estimating, procurement, permitting and construction management supervision. The project took 2 years and 1 in-stream construction window to complete. The avoided cost to the client associated with the keeping water flowing to the plant was in the range of $100,000,000 (their estimate).
