SDE performed a filtrate pump system study for a Pulp & Paper client. The client was experiencing cavitation and weld failures on the downstream side of the Pulp and Paper Dilution tank level control valves. SDE was contracted to study the system and identify the cause of the cavitation and make recommendations for remedy. Sacre-Davey Engineering conducted field measurements, pump system analysis, and hydraulic analysis. The recommendations included removing high pressure drop devices, changing the control system from a control valve to a variable frequency drive motor, and matching the pump speed to the system requirements. The energy reduction from 200 HP to 75 HP pump motors and control system changes projected a savings of 1,670 MWh/yr, substantial enough for significant BC Hydro PowerSmart funding.
